What does everyone do or in case you do when you pick up your laptop and its showing warning light or red light due to low battery? You will look for a charger and charge it to complete your work or a task. But wait, why is it no charging? What is wrong with the power jack? So in this situation we are here to guide you on How to Fix Laptop Power Jack without Soldering
As we know today laptops mobile pcs are very common. Easy to pick, travel with, mark, and done your work. But sometime in traveling and moving them from place to other might get laptops in some technical and mechanical disability. So one should be very careful with laptops. And one of the greatest problems amongst them is charging faults cause you have to do a lot of tasks and need them to charge many times sometimes maybe 2 to 3 times a day or in the worst case, if your laptop’s battery is not good you use it while its plugged. So the wire may get pulled or some other fault may happen.
In all these cases, first of all, you need to know what might could have happened to the laptop instead of going to the service or repairing shops that might prove you expensive because you don’t know what’s the problem and they could falsely lead to some way another about laptop fault.
Here are some ways to fix your laptop power jack effectively without soldering.
- Repairing using Modem Port
- Step 1: Modem Jack Removal
- Step 2: Power Jack Preparation
- Step 3: Fix It On
- Step 4: Safety and Prevention

Step 1: Modem Jack Removal
There is a Perfect Hole.
It’s usually unused in modern computing unless you have dial-up which is very rarely used nowadays.
Step 2: Power Jack Preparation
As the modem jack was removed so the power jack will have to be removed and then the wires will have to be attached with the power cord and it could be any power cord and though it should have to be thick enough that it could support the electric current needed to charge the laptop. Therefore the use of those audio cables, phone cable, etc. are not recommended.
Step 3: Fix It On
As you see in the figure, I glued the power jack to the space where the modem jack was originally using hot glue (I got from a $1 shop). The other end of the cords were soldered onto the motherboard where the power jack was originally.
And now you can reassemble all the parts of the laptop. Now you can see the empty hole which was occupied with power jack before. And the modem port now occupied with power jack.
Step 4: Safety and Prevention.
To reduce any stress and sudden pull to the wire and the freshly fixed power jack I made a restrainer with the rubber and a cut piece of the Ethernet cable.
If you pull the power cord abruptly, the rubber band absorbs the most of the shock and the Ethernet cable pulls the computer gently.
It certainly looks a little worse than before but it works!
Now to the next way to fix the laptop. If you did not find the former technique quite efficient then you may consider this technique too.

Repairing using barrel and changing adapters
Step 1: Preparing barrel
Here you might think why to use a barrel but here in this technique we are also looking forward to the look. Because the wire sticking out of the laptop will not look decent at all. So all you have to do is:
- Remove the tip of the marker as well as the ink holder part.
- Make a hole on the other side of the barrel and you are done with the barrel for now.
Step 2: Prepare the Laptop cord
- Generic AC Adapter
Now first of all cut the cord to the required length. Make sure of the length that big so you can it attach to the laptop cord. But it will be better if you leave some extra wire in case. Now insert the cord in the barrel that was prepared earlier. Strip the wire too.
- Laptop AC Adapter
Cut the loose plug that is needed to be replaced. Insert the cord in the tip part of the marker barrel. Strip the wires to express them to be used.
Step 3: Join the laptop cord for fixing power jack
Now here comes the most important step.
- Check the AC adapter and it should show the polarity where the outer conductor of the plug must be negative and the core of the plug must be positive.
- Now with proper care attach the AC adapter and the exposed wire must not touch and also check that which wire is positive and negative and note them.
- Now attach the inner part of the wire and cover the former attached part of the wire with the help of electric tape.
- Now the wires that are attached latter must also be protected by wrapping with electrical tape on it.
Step 4: Sealing barrel
Now comes the last step of the process. In this step before sealing the barrel, you must sure about the protection of the wire. For that purpose, you should add zip ties on both ends of the attached wires. The reason is if someone pulls it by any chance, zip ties will protect wires from disconnecting. Now the zip ties are in place, the barrel got sealed and you are good to go.
That’s all, you can now follow any of the above techniques to fix your laptop power jack without soldering that you find convenient.
